Benbecula is an island in the Outer Hebrides within the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Scotland. In the year 2001, the estimated resident population of Benbecula was about 1,249, with majority of Roman Catholics. It comprises of the area managed by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar or 'the Western Isles Council'. The origin of its name is Scottish Gaelic either Beinn Bheag a' bh-Faodha, that meant the 'little mountain of the ford' or Beinn a Bhuachaille, that meant 'herdsman's mountain'.
Benbecula is one of the few Outer Hebrides Islands located at the west coast of Scotland. Its name is suggestive of mountain of the ford. Its history dates back to the 6th century, while a monastery was established there. There are a number of monasteries and churches located here.
