Salisbury is positioned within Wiltshire towards southern England. The history of the city dates back to the Iron Age. Throughout the Roman times the city was referred as 'Sorviodunum'. When the city was called 'Searoburh', in the Saxon times, there was a large battle amongst the Britons as well as the West Saxons. Subsequent to the Normans occupation of England, a castle was constructed herein, and referred to as 'Sarum'.
At presnt, the castle site is unpopulated and is referred to as 'Old Sarum'. The site saw the construction of the 1st cathedral in Salisbury, in the year1075. But, the cathedral was re-sited subsequent to the relations stuck between military as well as clergy in the area soured. The new city or 'New Sarum' was established in the year 1220, and is what is now referred to as 'Salisbury'.
